Valley Regional Hyperbaric Center, Brownsville, TX.. I did not like the service. I was evaluated by a nurse who examined my ears and found them to be full of wax. She put a cotton swab in my ear to see the ear drum. She and the doctor cleared me for treatment. Initially during the first treatment I experienced extreme ear pain. The pain eventually went away. At the end of the of the session I was very dizzy, my head ached. I sat on the table about 15 minutes after treatment.
I was seen by another doctor who said the ear wax had to be removed before I could have another treatment. The nurse and admitting doctor allowed me to go into the hyperbaric chamber with wax in my ears which was improper and this caused me unnecessary pain and suffering. I went upstairs to a doctor's office to have the wax removed. The Medical Assistant was unable to remove the wax. I then went to Matamoros Mexico to see an ENT specialist who removed the wax.
After a two day lay off I returned to treatment and continued to have ear pain. I noticed the technician would put me in the chamber and then turn his back and start writing. This was his pattern. I would have to tap on the glass chamber to get his attention. The last straw for me was as I was getting out of the chamber and experiencing ear pain, a man spoke to me and the curtain was closed with me outside it leaving me with no privacy. At that point I decided not to return to Valley Regional Hyperbaric Center for treatment. My experience with Valley Regional Hyperbaric Center was a negative one. I switched to Doctor's Hospital Hyperbaric Center.
Hyperbaric treatment for me at Doctor's Hospital was a great improvement over Valley Regional. I first met the clinic manager who is the nurse in charge. I did not know the Clinic Manager at Valley Regional. At Doctor's Hospital the Hyperbaric technicians proceeded slowly having me clear my ears at each drop in pressure and thus I avoided unnecessary ear pain. The clinic manager would come by to check and see how I was doing. This did not happen at Valley Regional. Doctor's hospital seemed to have several trained hyperbaric technicians whereas I only noted one at Valley Regional. I had water with me in the chamber to sip and swallow to help clear my ears. At Doctor's Hospital I was given air breaks as a part of the routine. This means at certain times I was told to breath through a mask so as to breath regular air. This appeared to help my chest feel better. This was not the case a Valley Regional, I was told the mask was for an emergency. I found the personnel at Doctor's Hospital very attentive and the treatment to be excellent. Of the two hyperbaric centers I found Doctor's Hospital to be superior.
During my treatment, there was fluid build up in my ears. I got my eardrums punctured by a doctor in Matamoros Mexico and he removed the fluid. The ENT doctor I saw in Mexico was Dr. Lucio Guerra at Policlinica Los Angeles. He was knowledgeable about hyperbaric treatment and assisted me in getting through the treatment.
My vision changed during the treatment to the point where I could not drive safely. I went to an Optometrist Dr. Beatrice Vela, at Wal-Mart, Alton Gloor. She was thorough. She explained that in Texas you need 20/40 vision to get a license and at 20/40 I could not read anything. I purchased new glasses. I was told by the nurse and had read that vision would return to what it was prior to treatment. New glasses were necessary in order for me to drive safely and see at a distance. The treatment caused my blood pressure to rise. I was usually tired after treatment. While in the chamber I would watch Bonanza on TV. The TVs are equipped with VCR's and not DVD players.
